Help answer the question about Sweet Potato
Are there differences between a yam and a sweet potato?
I had what appeared to be a sweet Sweet Potato potato in a Japanese restaurant and it tasted great. Did not taste like sweet potato. Had a firmer texture and was yellowish rather than orange in color. Was it yam?

I am a musical instrument collector and when I saw this for such a low price I knew it had to be a toy. I just couldnt stop myself from getting it because I really wanted to know if I could get a good sound out of it. I can! I can play some simple tunes already. Its not the best sound in the world, but it is pretty fun. Its rather small fitting into the palm of my hand. I wear mens large gloves. It fits into any pocket. The placement of the holes are not too complicated to figure out. Your on you own because it doesnt come with any sort of guide but i didnt have too much trouble getting it. There are plenty of tabs on the internet for this thing. I think its a fun toy. For the price of it thats all you should expect. Good for children if you could find a guide on the internet.
Ok, I decided to buy this for my little boy because he is a Zelda fanatic and already had a clay ocarina which, unfortunately, ended up broken. The clay ocarina had a beautiful sound.
I thought it might be a good idea to get him this one made of plastic since it wouldn’t break. I expected it to not sound as good as a clay one, but I thought it would at least sound like a musical instrument, maybe the same quality as a plastic recorder.
Not a chance.
This thing has a terrible windy, whistle-y sound that just refuses to make any recognizable notes. You have to have large fingers to cover the holes completely enough to get anything that even remotely sounds like a note, and even then, when you lift different fingers to make different notes, they all come out sounding alike.
Needless to say it will not be something my son will enjoy and so I’m going to be buying another clay ocarina.
It’s a shame. You can get a plastic recorder from Wal-Mart for less than a dollar that sounds much more melodious than this would-be instrument.
The one positive thing I can say is that the vendor provided lightning fast shipping. I do not blame them for the quality of this product. They’re just selling it. The shipping was great so no complaints there.
The product is really just a toy, but it’s priced appropriately so I have no complaints. Someone looking for a real musical instrument should expect to pay much more, and look for a wooden or ceramic version.
got this in today, very fast shipping.. amazon has always been awesome. yeah its 7 dollars (or 8 whatever) but if you seriously want to learn this instrument pass the sweet potato up. in essence its two pieces of plastic molded together, mine had a few holes in the trim allowing this ocarina to sound like a dog dying. i will purchase the clay ocarina because i want to learn on something that sounds good, seriously the one i got, the 3 & 4 holes have no pitch difference. if a kid wants this they would probably be happy, again if your serious about learning pass the sweet potato up. the packaging looked like it had been in a dust warehouse for years.
If you’re a long time or experienced ocarina player this product is probably not for you. This is my first ocarina I’ve ever purchased and I bought it because I am a fan of the Zelda video game series and figured it would be worth the price. If you’re interested in learning how to play you can probably find some song tutorials on the web. But, if your looking for a more popular ocarina such as a twelve whole I recommend the $38.00 SongBird Sweet Potato Ocarina or a Blues King Ocarina. This is a 10-hole ocarina made of a thick plastic and looks slightly smaller and less smoother than shown in the display photo. From what I’ve played it works perfectly fine. Although it isn’t an exact replica of the original Legend of Zelda ocarina it is still worth its low price. Overall, I’d say it is worth purchasing if you are not willing to spend too much money or if you are not an experienced ocarina user.
