I bought this guitar for my son’s 4th birthday. He likes it and it’s well-sized for him but it doesn’t hold a tune. I.e. it needs to be re-tuned every 5-10 minutes or so. I don’t know if this is because it’s a nylon-string or what, but it’s definitely a pain.

I recently purchased a guitar for me to learn and my children were so intrigued that they wanted to do something while I was playing. I wanted to get an inexpensive guitar that was appropriate for there size since they were 5. It’s the perfect size for them but it does not sound like a guitar at all. It’s more like a Ukulele. It is worth the money and its fun for the kids but do not expect to have the same sounds.
I am an experienced guitar and ukulele player. This little guitar is such a great inbetween instrument. It is the same size as a baritone ukulele, and has the steel strings of a guitar, and the same tuning.
However, I did have to do minor maintence to actually be able to get sound that was clear out of it.
First, there was major fret buzz. You have to get a knife, and in the nut and saddle, thicken the wedges wear the strings go in, and make them deeper.
Second, the standard tuning for a guitar is eadgbe. eadgbe on this size instrument will have to much slack with the strings because of the scale size. So there are to instruments that come similar to this. A guitalele made by yamaha(not sold in the U.S) and a requinto which is a mexican instrument that is also tuned to adgcea. ADGCEA would be the same tuning as putting a capo on the 5th fret of a guitar.
So, tune it up to ADGCEA, the sound is brilliant, and so unexpected.
good product, the strings kind of hurt a little the tip of your fingers if you play too long but it’s a great buy and affordable for young kids who just start their classes.
I purchased this 1/2 scale guitar for my daughter’s 6th birthday. A couple of years ago I had purchased a 3/4 scale acoustic guitar made by Lauren, and I have never been able to really get it in tune or keep it in tune. Since my daughter has shown interest in playing the guitar, I figured that I needed to get something that at least sounded like a normal guitar. In talking with a local music store owner, he mentioned that the only brand that he has good luck with when it comes to child-sized guitars is Dean, so I decided to try the Dean Playmate.
So far, so good with the Dean Playmate. The finish on the guitar is nice, the tuners seem very solid, the shape of the tailpiece gives it a very distinctive look, and the size is perfect for a small child. It is a little bit hard for me to play since the spacing between the frets is so small, but my daughter seems to have no problem with it. I have a new set of strings for it, but I am letting her play around with it for now with the original strings, as it seems to stay in tune just fine with the originals.
Overall, I would say for the money, it is worth every penny for a child’s use, especially when their hands are just too small for a standard size guitar.
As a violin player for most of my life I consider this the worst violin I’ve ever used. If i was able to give it 0 stars I would. I bought this violin just need up my skills for a little while because my violin was too expensive too ship from another country. After receiving this violin it had many many problems. the strings are too close to the finger board you aren’t able to play any notes without the notes sounding horrible. The bridge doesn’t totally touch the violin base, so you aren’t able to even play the right notes when you actually are. The neck wasn’t straight and the area where the string was connected to the pecks was too narrow, so you aren’t able to even tune the string right without untuning the other strings. The wood on the bow wasn’t straight, there were a lot of horse hairs missing, you couldn’t even tighten the bow without a lot of force and worst of all the string are too close to each other so when you are playing one string you automatically touch another one. Play a song is impossible to sound. My opinion, if you still want to get this violin be prepared to spend an extra 100 dollars fixing all the problem. Plus, you won’t even be able to play anything with it.
These cheap Chinese made violins look OK opening the box, but they’re strictly beginner’s material. My daughters needed to upgrade after 1 year, and the supposedly higher-grade models are absolutely no better.
The other reviews I read here look suspicious — seller or manufacturer padding??
Take your chances on one of these if you want, but read the return policy VERY carefully.
I have always wanted to learn how to play the violin. Unfortunately, there are a lot of things that I’ve always wanted to do, and I was worried that the violin would be one of the ones that I didn’t want to do forever. So when I decided to get a cheap violin to test this out, I wanted to know exactly what I was going to get — and get it I did.
This isn’t the most handsome violin, nor are the strings of a particularly high quality. I had trouble keeping it tuned when I first got it, the bridge doesn’t fit perfectly, and I had to spend over two hours trying to get enough rosin on the bow. I was rather pleased to find out that I wouldn’t have to string it myself.
I expected all of this from reading these reviews.
I have been playing my violin for two days now. I have not had any trouble keeping it tuned since the first day (the strings are of low quality, so they had to stretch a little first before they would stop making the pegs spin). In fact, I took it out on a frigid night and fooled with it a bit, brought it back home and found that it was still in tune despite me having romped around with it.
Obviously this isn’t the best violin in the world, but that is why I have it, because I am not the best violinist in the world. Maybe, when I start to sound a little better, I will upgrade the strings, buy a proper bow, et cetera, but for now I am content.
Also, my rosin came in one piece, not crumbled as many other people have said. I don’t know if this was just me.
ok so i ordered this a long time ago.. but i JUST now discovered that i think i got the wrong item.. there are big differences in my item.. in the inside of the violin it says “Oppela” instead of “Cecilio” the case is BLUE same with the inside and the accessories it comes with are different as well. the rosin loks completely different and is in a square shape. also instead of the chin rest and other things being black, mine is brown. everything looked alot more cheaper than the pictures. did i get ripped off? did anyone else get this item like this? plz help! i dont know wether to put 1 star bcus im still ok with the item i got.. tho im not sure its the right one
After careful research, we purchased this violin for our daughter. Although some feedback left us the impression that the bow might be sub-par and the rosin might fall apart, everything in this package exceeded our expectations.
We purchased ours from Austin Bazaar and the item arrived with everything promised in the condition promised. The bows in the package are very nice. The rosin was boxed and when opened, it was encased in plastic on three sides which allows the user to draw the bow across the open side. I don’t even think my daughter got any rosin on her. My husband only had to score it a little bit to get it started and it worked wonderfully.
Although we had warned our daughter to look up instructions for attaching the bridge, the violin came with the bridge attached. It is a lovely violin and the finish is very nice. It makes a beautiful sound once the bow is properly covered in rosin.
The case is also very nice. The exterior is soft but the interior is a lined hard case that cradles the violin. There are places for all the accessories and the strap makes it easy to carry.
Many reviewers said a violin will lose tune until it is broken in. Our violin did lose it’s tune very quickly but, as many reviewers recommended, I ordered peg drops along with the violin and they solve the problem beautifully.
This violin is a fabulous compromise if you are new to playing or want something for practice that isn’t terribly expensive. We searched music stores all over our area and found nothing remotely comparable or as reasonably priced. I wouldn’t hesitate to buy a Cecilio again.
When I read one of the reviews, I did not want to buy the violin. I just wanted to rent it, but renting it would cost me the same as buying it.
I do not regret buying this violin. It is great.
I purchased this item because, after playing guitar for a few years, I wanted to make a departure to a new instrument, while still sticking to something with strings. Well, I received it about 6 weeks ago and have been taking lessons for 5, and I gotta say, this violin really does it’s job. It was nice to order it, and BAM, ya got everything you need (sans tuner) to start playing. The two bows are nice and have a good feel, but you probably realize they’re not the best, but they certainly work. The rosin I received came in a nice little box that keeps it safe and intact. The outfit also comes with a second bridge and strings, which, at this point, I can’t really comment on because I’ve had no use. The pegs of the violin slipped at first, but with a little playing and practice, came to hold tune really well, which surprised me. The fine tuners are really nice as well, being very smooth and make getting it in tune that much easier. The case that keep it all together is very nice as well. it’s very sturdy and has nice storage space and a good, smooth zipper.
Moving away from the features, the violin was also basically setup, a fact my teacher was quick to point out, and was very impressed with. The only thing that really needed done was tuning.
All in all, I think this was an awesome purchase, and should be a great starter instrument for anyone wanting to learn. The only thing that was not quite as the product description described was the color. the violin’s body is much lighter, and the chin rest and pegs are a bit darker, bit this is really a good thing, as it makes the violin that much more attractive. If someone is still undecided about whether or not to purchase this, I’d say go for it, it’s well worth the $100 that’s asked for it.
I need a violin for my lessons(I got a rental violin for months, have been trying to find a good and affordable violin under $600, but couldn’t find the one I really like yet. I ordered CVN-200 to save $$$ on a rental violin.)
My CVN-200 has some cosmetic defects. The paint job and workmanship on the fingerboard are bad, both bows are good though. I know some people here gave nice reviews for their CVN-200. Anyway, my CVN-200 looks very cheaply made. Since I only paid less than $100 for it, defects are quite common and expected. I also understand that it’s the risk of shopping online.
I set it up and tried to play, “Wow, not too bad! ” I talked to myself. To my surprise, the tone was nice and kept in tune well. So I didn’t return it and took it to my ensemble class.( Among all of the violins, anyone can tell that mine is the cheapest. :p ) It’s been doing ok, my instructor didn’t complain about it, either.
I have owned this violin for almost 2 months. If you ask me to pay the list price on Amazon(almost $300) for it, No way. But for the price I paid for it, I’m happy with it. It keeps in tune, good tone, playable, can be used for practice purpose.
I bought this violin to start my daughter on, and it’s been perfectly serviceable. The natural wood and real horsehair bow were a pleasant surprise in an instrument with this price point, and the instrument itself exceeded my (admittedly low) expectations. I grew up a violinist, so I knew I would not be getting the highest quality instrument for this price, but for a child just starting to play, you want an instrument that you won’t have weep over if it does happen to get dropped facedown on the floor, or if your child decides to move on to piano or flute instead. This violin fit the bill. It is well-enough put together to learn on, stay in tune, and have passable tone. The only problem I had was that the mass-produced bridge had to be filed down by a luthier to fit the strings properly, but that cost me less than $20 and made all the difference. The case was of higher quality than I expected and my daughter loves the backpack straps. Good starter package.
This is a very nice keyboard for home use or a beginner/hobbyist. I have owned numerous pro keyboards and purchased this for my son to use. The sounds are a very high quality and are worlds better than the home keyboards of 10 years ago. Very light key action is to be expected but the keys are responsive and velocity sensitive. Includes some interesting performance features and a USB connection to use with the included software or as a generic MIDI input device for any sequencing software you might use. In summary, this Yamaha YPT410 is a steal for the price and I’m tempted to buy another one for myself!
The headphones bundled with this keyboard DO NOT fit the keyboard headphone jack. Amazon said I could return it or accept 20% off the price, presumably to buy headphones that actually work with this keyboard. Not the biggest problem in the world, but come on — the headphones in the box should at least plug into the keyboard. These aren’t even close.
Sounds great and functions well. I am not a great keyboard player or anything but at a beginner level it is working really well. Even the music teacher liked it and asked for the model number to buy for his other students. I would have given 5 stars but the stand (that came with the keyboard) does not fit in the grooves but the keyboard rests ok on it and the rubber grips on the bars of the stand keeps it in place.
First, I am not a professional musician. But I love music, and have a pretty good ear. This keyboard sounds just fine in it’s default “Yamaha Piano” mode. However many of the other simulated instruments (called “voices”) seem to be very much out of key. For example, a simple C-Major chord in the “church organ” voice actually hurts my ears. Playing the C and E notes together in this voice results in an obvious beat. Many of the voices that I would like to use have this problem, while others are OK. For example, the “chapel organ” C-Major chord sounds just fine. In addition, many of the simulated instruments do not sound much like the instrument they are imitating. Thus, to me none of the guitar options sound like a guitar.
The built-in speakers have a definite resonance point. This makes certain notes seem much louder. This is more obvious when using some of the other “voices” than it is in the “Yamaha Piano” mode.
The display panel is much too small for my older eyes. Using it to learn to play is also pretty useless, as it only displays one or two notes of the song at a time. It is really difficult to play when you can’t see what is coming up, and the effort is reduced to basically an exercise in reaction time.
The plastic sheet music stand could have used a more defined lip at the bottom to keep pages in music books held open. I have resorted to setting something on the music stand in front of the pages.
As other reviewers have noted, the included keyboard stand does not fit the keyboard, nor is it adjustable for height. It is too high to use with any standard chair, and too low for me to use while standing. However Amazon is not the culprit here. The bundle is from Yamaha, and the stand is of their manufacture. I replaced it with On Stage KS7350 Pro Heavy Duty Folding Z Keyboard Stand ( http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000LCRP14/ref=oss_product ). This stand also does not attach to the keyboard. However it is adjustable for both height and width, and will go down to a height that makes the keyboard comfortable when sitting on a standard office or kitchen chair. The keyboard seems pretty secure sitting on it.
Bottom line – OK as a piano keyboard, so-so on the added bells and whistles. For the price, I am disappointed.
